the orchestra

Stockport Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1975 as The New Orchestra of Manchester.

A spectacular finale with three famous concertos is on 30 March 2019.   Tickets are available now!

Please consider supporting the competition to enable us to make it a regular feature of the classical music calendar and an event of significance for the town

Over 40 years ago the orchestra accepted the offer by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council of a permanent home in the Edwardian splendour of the Town Hall and we are now proud to celebrate 40 seasons as the Borough's official orchestra.  The orchestra performs eight concerts each season at the Town Hall and also appears elsewhere during the year.

The winner of SIYMC 2019 will collect a prize of £1000 and the opportunity to perform again with Stockport Symphony Orchestra in the following season

Philip Ellis is the competition conductor and chair of the judges’ panel
